Walking to class after swim practice, Ava thought of pinching herself to make sure the last few days hadn’t just been a dream. People didn’t really do that, did they? The thing was, Ava was surprised to find it was mostly a good dream. The woods seemed further away than they had this morning.

In a daze, she nearly walked under a ladder propped up against the wall of the West Building, where her first class was that morning. She looked up to see Giles perched midway up the tall ladder, hanging a silver banner advertising the homecoming dance. He briefly looked down at Ava then continued his task without saying hello. His expression was blank. Ava felt chilled. Of course. She would never have met Giles if Courtney hadn’t messed with her locker. Giles didn’t know her anymore - or yet? This was all very confusing.

Ava gave the ladder a wide berth as she walked up to the door, not wanting to tempt fate. She noticed the homecoming banner had been professionally printed. The posters for dances at her school in San Francisco had always been hand drawn with markers or paint. Ava and Lucas hadn’t gone to the dances back home. Instead they went to lots of movies at the second-run theatre downtown, or spent low-key time together hanging out at home. Homecoming seemed like a really big deal here. Jules kept telling her that she should go. Ava bit her lip. The homecoming dance was the last thing she needed to think about. A nagging voice told her she should really call Lucas. She had no idea what to say.

Ava sighed as she reached the door to calculus. Every class today brought her closer to tonight, when she could end this mixed up reality. She pulled open the door. She was glad English class wasn’t on today’s schedule. No Ms. Krick.

“Ava Marshall?” a voice called to her from behind her in the hall.

Ava turned and felt her stomach churn as she saw Headmistress Valentine walking toward her. She steeled herself for the onslaught.

“Ava?” said the headmistress, standing beside Ava’s classroom door. “I’m Headmistress Valentine.”

“Uh…” Ava stammered, her skin prickling. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Of course, there had been no meeting about the caffeine pills. There was no Courtney.

“I just wanted to welcome you to St. Augustus,” the headmistress continued. “I took a guess that it was you just now. I met your Aunt Mia and you look so much like her.”

Ava looked curiously at the headmistress, who was smiling.

“I spoke with Coach Laurel this morning,” the headmistress continued. “She tells me you’ve agreed to be team captain. Did you know you’ll be the first junior team captain the Owls have ever had? The position is always reserved for a senior. You must have really impressed her.”

“Oh,” said Ava, at a loss for words.

“Well, don’t let me keep you from class,” said the headmistress with a laugh as she urged Ava into Mr. Chase’s classroom.

Ava walked slowly into the classroom and took her seat, feeling uneasy.
